Dublin Airport is the largest and busiest airport on the island of Ireland, as over eighteen million passengers pass through it on a yearly basis. In previous years, the airport has even handled up to 23 million passengers. With a new terminal now in operation, Dublin Airport has the capacity for thirty-five million passengers per annum. The airport is just outside of the city of Dublin, and south of Swords. It is found in Collinstown, in the county of Fingal. It’s facilities include car hire companies, such as National Dublin Airport, and National is one of the most well-known car rental companies in the world. Customers enjoy National’s reasonable car rental rates, and high quality vehicles in many countries around the globe.
Although cars of all varieties are hired by National, they are a company best known for their services designed to assist the frequent airport business traveller. National began their services in 1947, and is today known as a premium and internationally recognised brand with rental locations at the majority of airports, and also at many downtown locations. In the 1970’s, National helped pioneer the corporate-account business, and was also the first company to have introduced a comprehensive frequent-renter program by 1987. This program is known as the Emerald Club, and it’s benefits are enjoyed by thousands of National customers. In general, the membership allows faster and more convenient reservations, rentals and returns, especially with the option of ‘car choice’, enabling customers to quickly choose their vehicle and be on their way, without the need to complete any lengthy paperwork. Convenient e-receipts are also provided for members of Emerald Club.
The Dublin Airport car hire companies, including National, are found in both terminals of the airport. Passengers on short-haul flights arriving at Terminal 1 will find the car rental companies in the main arrivals hall, and just past the customs offices, while passengers arriving on long-haul flights and in Terminal 2, will need to follow the car rental signs to the terminal’s new multi-storey car park. In both terminals, the car rental counters can be reached on foot, and they are open at most hours of the day, seven days a week. Rentals can be made directly over the counter, or in advance, which is often preferable, as then cheaper rental rates could be offered. Advanced bookings also ensure peace of mind that your rented car and all items of equipment required will be ready for your arrival. The operating hours of National Dublin Airport, are from 05:00 to 23:59, Monday to Sunday.
Online is the most convenient way to hire a car, and also offers the opportunity to reserve ‘optional extra’s’ such as child seats, luggage racks and satellite navigation systems. The GPS units are of the highest quality, with turn-by-turn directions to any destination desired. Directions are in voice or visual mode, on a colour touch screen, and can be provided in several languages. The device comes pre-programmed with many points of interest as well. Child seats are required by law in Ireland for small children, and are therefore an essential part of your car rental quote. In addition, National hand controls for disabled drivers can be requested from the rental location of Dublin Airport. Hand controls operate the brake and accelerator pedals of automatic vehicles, and are free of charge.
When collecting your vehicle from one of the Dublin Airport car rental companies, bring along your driving licence, International Driving Permit if from a foreign country and a major credit card that can be used for payment of the rental contract. Cards generally accepted include American Express, Diners Club, Eurocard, Mastercard and Visa. Other documents/information that may be required include your passport, a return airline ticket, an address and telephone numbers. Remember to also arrange vehicle insurance, such as collision damage waiver and theft protection. Third party liability insurance is usually automatically included in the quote. Don’t leave the airport unless you are happy with the workings of the vehicle, you have the emergency numbers to contact in case of an accident or breakdown and knowing which type of fuel to use for your vehicle. Your car will start the rental period with a full tank.
Unless a National one way hire has been arranged, return your vehicle to Dublin Airport. One way hire services allow the car to be returned elsewhere and can be a convenient option, however, the details of this type of rental should be confirmed with National. Vehicles can usually be driven to cities in Northern Ireland, but may not be taken off the island of Ireland.
National’s cars may be similar to the Fiat Punto 1.0 and Ford Fiesta 1.0 in the Economy category, the Ford Focus 1.4 in the Compact category and the Toyota Avensis 1.6 in the Intermediate category. Fullsize vehicles are similar to the Saab 93 1.8, and Vans which are ideal for groups of travellers include the Renault Scenic 1.6 and the Opel Zafira 1.6. The vehicles have either a manual or automatic transmission, and some nice features, such as power steering, anti-lock brakes, air conditioning and air bags.
